5th Avenue porch

With the back porch finished we needed to move on to work on the side porch. This porch was originally an open porch and very likely the one used by the family to come and go. When the house was split into a duplex, the porch was enclosed and a stair was built to the second floor unit using stair parts from the original front stair. This second floor unit even had a 5th Avenue address!

The side porch roof was in bad shape, and the structure underneath was suspect as well. While the porch will be returned to an open porch in a couple of years, it provides a good area on which to practice pointing for the moment.

This photo was taken shortly before the overhang was removed and re-purposed over the garage door. Rough!

The ironwork was removed and sent to be stripped and powder coated. Meanwhile...

most of the timber structure needed replacing, as did the rotten trim.

Another beautiful slate roof...

...and the ironwork came back from the shop for re-installation!

While we had Wayne Moore's crew handy, why not repaint the finial on the tower?
